The Moselle – A JOURNEY BACK IN TIME

A west-bank tributary of the Rhine, the gentle waters of the Moselle are where the best parts of the ancient world come together to form a traveler’s paradise. Originating from the forested peaks of the Vosges mountains in France, the Moselle flows a short distance through Luxembourg before its most famous section in Germany, where Roman Empire military outposts sought to shape the area in Rome’s image.

Along the Moselle

Not only do cities like Trier fascinate with 2,000-year-old Roman-era ruins, but the river valley is rife with Roman-planted vineyards that today produce some of the world’s most exquisite white wines. The Middle Ages also played a big role in the Moselle River Valley as commerce and settlements flourished, and imposing structures like Reichsburg Castle and fairytale Burg Eltz established long-term reminders of the wealthy powerbrokers who once ruled the region.

Cochem

Cochem

Germany

With just 5,000 residents, Cochem could easily be mistaken for a sleepy village, but this Moselle gem is full of surprises! From the ancient gate and old watchtower to the market square lined with half-timber houses, there's something to see in every directions! There's also plenty of scenic beauty during riverbank strolls and vineyard hikes. Highlights include the hilltop castle dating back to 1000 AD; relaxing rides on the river’s only cable car; and the chance to sample the red Moselle vineyard peach, the juicy "Persian apple" the Romans brought to the area in ancient times!

Trier

Trier

Germany

Wine or the Romans? Which made Trier what it is today? The answer is—both. As early as 30 BC, the Romans introduced viticulture to the region during their occupation and the result has been phenomenal. Visitors can see evidence of the Romans' stay by visiting the Porta Nigra, the best-preserved Roman city gate north of the Alps; the impressive Roman amphitheater; Roman baths; and the Roman Bridge, the oldest bridge in Germany. Other worthwhile sights include the imposing cathedral and the Electoral Palace, which was once the residence of the prince-electors of Trier. Afterward, it's time to relax with—what else? A glass of excellent Moselle Valley wine, courtesy of the Romans!
