Both Sides of the Danube by eBike

Scenery, exercise, and fresh air in two countries—this tour has it all! Join an expert guide for an electric bicycle tour that begins in pretty Esztergom. Then, cross the mighty Danube (and the border) and head to Štúrovo in neighboring Slovakia. Founded in the 16th century by the Turks as a base against the Habsburgs, the town’s former name meant “the fortress stabbing the enemy’s liver”. Thankfully, it was renamed after WWII in honor of a local Slovakian leader. As the Danube twists and bends, you’ll enjoy breathtaking views of the Basilica of Esztergom and the Kováčske and Pilišské Vrchy mountains. Cross back over the Danube for the return trip to your ship. NOTE: This tour requires riding an electric bicycle. Please wear appropriate clothing and shoes.

Visegrád Fortress, Medieval Gateway to the Danube

Your excursion begins with a 30-minute coach ride to Visegrád, former royal seat of Hungary. Here, you will visit the ruins of the upper and lower castle, parts of the complex built by Béla IV in the 13th century. The citadel protected the Danube Valley, controlled the main trade route between Buda and Esztergom, and served as a customs house. Over time, though, the border fortress system was dissolved, and the stronghold became obsolete. Climb the steps and explore what remains of this once-mighty castle—and be sure to have your camera handy for the jaw-dropping view of the U-shaped river loop below, the famed Danube Bend.
